A medieval wall, dating to c. AD 1200, has been uncovered at Winchester College, during the refurbishment and extension of a Listed Building that stands in the Warden’s Garden, adjacent to the original 14th-century College buildings and the water meadows.

The wall, uncovered during the opening of a heating trench by the site’s developers, Oxford-based construction company Kingerlee Limited, was recorded by a team from Wessex Archaeology led by Phil Harding of Channel 4’s Time Team fame.

Once complete, the building will benefit from new auditorium seating, acoustic ceiling sails and renewable energy systems. The development works include the repair and conservation of the 17th-century panelling that once lined the nearby 14th century Chapel, and the construction of a biomass boiler plant.

The project began in July 2013 and is expected to finish in September 2014.
