Andrea Burgess

Research Director
Andrea joined Wessex Archaeology in 2010 and initially worked as a fieldwork Project Manager for our Sheffield office. She then managed the northern office’s newly formed Heritage Consultancy team before specialising in post-excavation analysis, reporting and publication in 2013. Andrea was appointed Research Director in 2016.
Since graduating in 1994, Andrea gained experience in a broad range of archaeological roles. She started as a fieldwork site assistant and progressed to directing and managing excavations including large road schemes, and writing and editing the resultant publications. In 2005 Andrea became a county curator advising the West Yorkshire local planning authorities and also acted as statutory consultee for a number of major infrastructure projects across the Yorkshire region.
This varied career-development path gives Andrea hands-on experience in two sides of commercial archaeology and a clear understanding of the needs of our clients, consultants and curators.
As Research Director she leads Wessex Archaeology’s post-excavation and finds teams across all of our offices. Andrea is keen to ensure that we inform academics, researchers and the wider public about our sites and discoveries, and is currently exploring ways to achieve this by expanding our range of digital publications.
