Matt Williams

2868 Matt Williams

Business Manager, Wales

Matt has 18 years’ experience in commercial archaeology and a firm background in heritage consultancy, planning advice and managing fieldwork projects. He joined WA in 2016 and is now responsible for the business development and day to day running of the WA Welsh office. This role involves managing major projects in the energy and transport sectors including windfarms and road schemes, and Matt is responsible for expanding and maintaining the business in these competitive markets.

Matt started his career in field archaeology and has previously set up and developed a field archaeology department before focussing on consultancy and project management. He has overseen a wide variety of projects including large scale excavations in Bognor Regis to investigate the prehistoric landscape, deep urban excavations in the nationally important Roman fort at Chester, and geophysical survey and excavations around the scheduled Anglo-Saxon earthwork of Wat’s Dyke. He has also published a monograph on excavations at the inland Roman salt production site at Middlewich.

Matt also has a keen interest in archaeology in the media; he appeared for many years as one of the core archaeologists on ‘Time Team’ and has co-presented the last two series of ‘Digging for Britain’ with Professor Alice Roberts.
