Desk studies & EIAs

Researching‘Is there anything there?’ This is usually the first question and the answer comes from surveys that bring together what is already known. These do not usually involve field surveys:

Rapid appraisals: quickly assess the likelihood of archaeological remains being present on a site.

Desk-based Assessments: are often required as first stages of a planning application. These systematically bring together all known heritage information to make an informed assessment of what is known and what finds may be predicted.

Environmental Impact Assessments: are required for larger projects. They also provide an informed assessment but also rigorously assess the likely impacts of the project.

Strategic Environmental Assessments: consider the implications of large scale regional and strategic developments.
