From March to October 2019, Wessex Archaeology attended 8 UK Big Bang fairs; events which enable young people to take part in activities from STEM organisations. Big Bang Fairs encourage young people to pursue the study of subjects that can lead to careers in STEM, and are aimed at school-aged children from surrounding schools.
Wessex Archaeology's STEM ambassadors designed a series of hands-on activities, each of about 15 minutes, to provide a STEM learning experience for our Big Bang Fair visitors.
For example, our 'Chocolate Geology' activity enabled participants to understand the concept of geoarchaeology, with each layer of edible material representing a layer of stratigraphy.
Over the course of these events, over 6000 young people took part in our activities and learned more about archaeology and how it relates to STEM.
