The role – what’s involved? 

We are looking for a Software Developer with Delphi skills to join the growing Data and Systems Team. This is a great opportunity for someone from a relevant background with great technical skills and an interest in archaeology. 

You’ll primarily be involved in developing and maintaining Wessex Archaeology’s terrestrial archaeology recording system, our internally developed tool for managing our terrestrial fieldwork and post-excavation processes. You’ll do this alongside another dedicated internal Software Developer for the terrestrial archaeology recording system, external development partners, and the rest of the Data and Systems team. This system includes data capture on site during excavations alongside a range of applications to import site survey data, capture post-excavation analysis of finds, interpret and report on findings, and manage archives. It is used by teams across Wessex Archaeology, including archaeologists on site, post-ex specialists, and others.

You’ll also be involved in other work being done within the Data and Systems team at an exciting time within the Company, with room to expand your skillset and experience with other systems and processes.
 

Main responsibilities will include:  

The Software Developer is responsible for upkeep and future development of one of the pillars of technological improvement at Wessex Archaeology. 

The role has 4 main areas of responsibility:

  • Ensure the terrestrial archaeology recording system is supported and maintained
  • Continue to develop the terrestrial archaeology recording system
  • Assess the needs and requirements of users of the terrestrial archaeology recording system and prioritise these according to organisational strategy and requirements
  • Ensure technical documentation is up to date and consummate with our organisational QMS requirements

Essential skills and experience:  

  • Delphi (Android (FMX) and Windows (VCL)), SQL, git version control
  • Min 2-3 years’ experience of developing systems
  • Experience managing databases and data function processes
  • Agile/DevOps experience

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Interest in archaeology and digital recording of archaeology
  • Experience working with the Microsoft product environment (Sharepoint/Azure etc.)
  • GIS Software experience highly desirable
  • Knowledge of other programming languages beneficial (C#,C++, Python)
