Wessex Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in the UK and is a registered Charity whose aims are to promote the advancement of education and the advancement of the arts, culture, heritage and science. We have offices in Salisbury, Sheffield, Maidstone, Bristol, Edinburgh and Wales.

We are seeking a highly motivated Community Engagement Assistant to assist in the delivery of our expanding Learning and Engagement Programmes. The position will be based at our head office in Salisbury. If you are an excellent communicator who is able to differentiate ideas and information to varied audiences, this will be a fantastic opportunity to assist in the development and delivery of our public programmes. Building relationships and collaborating with colleagues across the business you will help stimulate positive change in society through the work that we do. You will be passionate about delivering our charitable aim, to support the education of the public in the arts, culture, heritage and science through the pursuit of archaeology, to benefit society and the economy. As Community Engagement Assistant you will promote an understanding and appreciation of our cultural heritage and believe that engagement with our heritage strengthens community cohesion and sense of place.

 

Position requirements:

The ideal candidate will have experience of:

  • delivering exciting learning in the education or cultural heritage sectors.
  • developing and delivering community engagement events and activities. 
  • supporting and training volunteers.

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a working knowledge of:

  • the current formal education landscape of the UK and it’s curricula.
  • British archaeology and history.
  • pedagogical theory and practise.

The behavioural attributes that we require are to:

  • provide mentoring, coaching and training to colleagues who deliver engagement activity.

The post will require flexibility in working hours; this is not a 9-5 desk job. Longer days, evening and weekend work will be required with notice. Time in lieu is accrued in these circumstances.

You must hold a full UK Driving Licence. A DBS check will be carried out upon employment.

  • A covering letter illustrating the relevant skills and experience you have which you feel demonstrate your ability to meet the role description and person specification.
  • An overview of a resource box that could be used by a teacher to meet one of the intended learning outcomes below (taken from the National Curriculum for England & Wales, Key Stage 2). Consider that when consulted, teachers have asked that heritage organisations offer a ‘treasure chest’ to help them deliver exciting and innovative learning in the classroom. In creating the box keep in mind different learning styles, tangible resources and supporting visual and written material. During interview you will be asked to discuss your ideas.
    • Literacy: Pupils should be taught to write narratives about personal experiences and those of others, write about real events and write for different purposes.
    • Science: Pupils should be taught to use simple features to compare objects, materials and living things and, with help, decide how to sort and group them, observe changes over time, and, with guidance, they should begin to notice patterns and relationships.
    • History: Pupils should understand the ‘Romanisation’ of Britain: the impact of technology, culture and beliefs, including early Christianity.
