To cover maternity leave, we are looking for an Environmental Laboratory Technician to join our team for 12 months, to be based at our Salisbury office and Amesbury ancillary facilities.

The role

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic professional for the role of Environmental Laboratory Technician to join our Environmental team, to assist with the processing of palaeoenvironmental soil samples. This opportunity would offer the chance to work on some of the most exciting archaeological projects in the country. You can expect to work on materials from all time periods and from across the UK.

The role comprises (but is not limited to) the wet and dry processing of environmental soil samples for the retrieval of macrofossils, archaeological artefacts and human remains. You will use your organisational skills to keep accurate records and will be required to liaise with other members of the Wessex Archaeology team to ensure an efficient delivery of the processing work. You will assist in the smooth running of the environmental laboratories, and contribute to a positive, safe, and inclusive work environment. The successful candidate would be an organized individual, capable of working independently and as part of the team.

This role would involve repetitive manual tasks and demand manual handling on a daily basis. Working indoors and outdoors would both be required. There would be opportunities available to expand your paleoenvironmental skillset and to become involved with public engagement. This position is offered on a 12-month fixed-term maternity cover basis, but there may be scope to extend the contract after this period depending on the availability of work. This is a full-time position, but part-time working will be considered for the right candidate.

About you

We are looking for applicants with a great interest in environmental archaeology, with a can-do attitude and excellent organisational skills. You should be meticulous, able to manage your own workload and timekeeping and have a keen eye for detail. Prior experience of processing, and a familiarity with the identifications of paleoenvironmental and archaeological materials is advantageous. You will preferably be in the possession of a full UK driving license.

This role would be based at the Wessex Archaeology head office in Salisbury as well as the ancillary laboratory facilities in Amesbury located 7 miles from the head office.
