Last week Louise Tizzard and Jonathan Benjamin attended the final SPLASHCOS - Submerged Prehistoric Archaeology and Landscapes of the Continental Shelf – conference ‘Under the Sea: Archaeology and Palaeolandscapes’. The conference, held in Szczecin, Poland, was attended by archaeologists, marine geoscientists, heritage agencies, and commercial organisations with an interest in submerged landscape archaeology.

As part of the Submerged Landscapes and Archaeology session Louise presented the results of recent investigations within Area 240, a marine aggregate licence area situated in the North Sea, situated 11 km off the coast of Norfolk, England.

Also, a poster presented palaeogeographic modelling work from the Sound of Harris carried out by Andy Bicket and Genevieve Shaw as part of the recent Outer Hebrides Coastal Community Marine Archaeology Pilot Project (OHCCMAPP). This community-based project aimed to enhance the archaeological records of the Outer Hebrides, with special focus on intertidal and marine zones.

Other sessions at the conference covered Sea Level, Climate and Palaeoenvironment; Submerged Landscapes and Human Dispersal; Underwater Archaeological Sites; Survey Strategies, Techniques and Collaboration with Industry; and Management and Outreach. Over 60 papers were presented (and tweeted #spashcos) over a packed three days and proved a great opportunity to understand the latest research in submerged landscapes and archaeology.
