Welcome to Vix Hughes, Wessex Archaeology's newest Senior Project Officer.

I joined Wessex in 2022 as a Senior Project Officer and I’ve been working as an archaeologist for over 25 years. I am always engaged with fieldwork projects, in all forms, with the follow-up post-excavation and I’ve covered a wide range of sites of various sizes. I’ve worked in many regions across the country, which allows for a broad understanding of the people and places both then and now.

My experience has included large scale infrastructure projects such as road and power schemes, Crossrail in London and more recently HS2; along with urban city regenerations, cemeteries and churches, rural housing developments and an occasional Roman villa. Highlights, to date, include numerous projects in Liverpool’s historic city center and a month-long community excavation done as part of the East Kent Access Road. The involvement of colleagues and the public in archaeology and telling the story of the sites we investigate are the best treasure to be found.

I’ll happily tackle anything from the Bronze Age onwards, though I prefer to be Roman or later and I’ve found something to enjoy and learn from almost every project I’m involved with.

Working for the Wessex means I’m joining an organization with excellent ideas and outlook towards archaeology and heritage and being in the Bristol office is like a homecoming for a Bristolian!

Good luck in your new role and welcome to the team Vix!
